Suzhou has always been a city with advanced education, glory culture, and a galaxy of talents. In history, there were 51 Number One Scholar and more than 1500 successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations, and in the present age, 104 academician members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering come from Suzhou, Since the founding of new China, especially implementation of the policy of reform and opening up, party committees and governments at all levels attach great importance to education, and with efforts made by educators and support from the whole society, education in Suzhou has achieved leap-forward development. Suzhou has 1150 schools of all kinds and at all levels with 1.3 million students and a faculty of 100 thousand including 8 thousand teachers. There are also 4 schools for foreign students in Suzhou, which is half the total number in Jiangsu province. Suzhou has 26 foreign-China cooperative education institutions, 145 schools that are granted with qualification to recruit foreign students, and 7 Chinese language promotion bases. At present, nearly 6000 foreign students and more than 4000 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are studying in Suzhou, and meanwhile more than 600 foreign teachers are employed here.
