Zhang Zhiyuan is an expert in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Born in Wujiang, he is a native of Suzhou. Zhang is a member of the Communist Party of China. He graduated from the Department of Stomatology of Shanghai Second Medical College in 1975, and obtained his doctorate degree in 1991. He is now the academic leader of the national key discipline of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Concurrently, he serves as the vice president of the Chinese Stomatological Association, executive director of China Anti-Cancer Association, honorary chairman of the Special Committee of Head and Neck Tumors of China Anti-Cancer Association, chairman of China Branch of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). Zhang has also been honored with fellowship of the International College of Dentistry, the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong. He is the chief editor of 11 monographs, the leading scientist in charge of 19 ministerial and commission-level projects, including projects supported by the state “863 Program,” and the “11th Five-Year Plan,” etc. Two of them are key projects and five are general ones funded by the National Natural Science Foundation. As the major contributor, Zhang has been awarded two second prizes of the State Science and Technology Progress Award, and a second prize of the Natural Science Award of the State Science and Technology Award upon the nomination by the Ministry of Education and a third prize of the China Medical Science and Technology Award. His Oral Science (the 6th edition) won the second prize of the Excellent State-Compiled Textbook Award. In 2002, he was awarded the title of “Young and Middle-Aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions” issued by the Ministry of Health. Zhang has won the title of Top Ten Science and Technology Elites in Shanghai as well. His other honors include the Science and Technology Progress Award issued by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, the title of National Excellent Scientific and Technological Worker, and the 4th Chinese Physicians Award. In 2015, Zhang was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
